STYUS MORNINGS
[fragment stanzas 16th to 21st (final)]
And he, it is told,
But lately kept her company,
Returning from some races
To the ranch that is her home.
Then the silvery moon above,
Pouring forth its vivid lights,
Showed itself all aglow
Alongside the mother of love.
How beautiful that star is!
The delicate girl broke out,
Given over to vague thoughts
As she walked on contemplating.
And he told her, without hesitation,
"It's true... always divine".
And he started with tender eyes
Into hers in her distraction.
I cannot say for sure
If she, in her innocence,
Could possibly comprehend
The mistery in those looks and words.
But surely ever since that time
She is lost in flights of fancy
Whenever she sees that star
Shining in the limpid sky.
October, 1840.
